A special event presented by Platform, a London-based organisation who campaign for social and ecological justice through art, activism, education and research (http://platformlondon.org).

This multimedia event explores the the social, environmental and political impacts of the oil industry though a journey tracing the flow of oil from the Caspian Sea to Europe, along tanker routes and pipelines including the controversial Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline.

Pieces of documentary film from 1898 – 2010 will be interspersed with readings from Platform’s new book, The Oil Road. The film clips include some of the earliest film footage ever shot – an 1898 film of an oil gusher in Baku – and a little seen Bernardo Bertolucci film, La Via de Petrolio, commissioned by an oil company as a promotional video.

The Oil Road event acts as a prelude to the next Social Documents exhibition which opens on 19 January 2013. Entitled ECONOMY this group show sets out to examine the impact of the economy upon life. Themes include resource conflict, the effects of climate change, migration, labour conditions and the quest for alternatives.

Platform’s new book “The Oil Road – A Journey from the Caspian to the City” is out with Verso on 20th September 2012. Chosen as Time Out’s Book of the Week – 5 stars.
